What Are Smart Followers? Measuring Influence Beyond Follower Count

Smart Followers are X accounts Kaito finds central to crypto, AI or stocks communities. See how the count works, how it differs from followers, and how to use it.

Watch on X

Smart Followers are X (Twitter) accounts that Kaito identifies as central to a community, such as crypto, AI or stocks, because other central accounts follow them at an unusually high rate. An account’s Smart Follower count is how many of them follow it. Unlike raw follower count, it can’t be inflated by buying followers.

A follower count tells you how many accounts follow someone, while a Smart Follower count tells you how many accounts recognised within that community follow them.

This guide explains how Kaito identifies Smart Followers, how to read a Smart Follower count, and how to use the accounts behind the number in research and creator selection.

What are Smart Followers?

Smart Followers are X accounts that Kaito identifies as central to a community (crypto, AI, equity, trader, macro or general) because other central accounts in that community follow them at an unusually high rate. An account’s Smart Follower count is how many of those accounts follow it.

They come from Kaito’s social graphs: maps of who follows whom within each community on X. For how those graphs work, see our guide to what a social graph is.

How does Kaito identify Smart Followers?

Kaito uses inter-following ratios within each social graph. An inter-following ratio describes how heavily an account is followed by other accounts that are already central to the same community. Follows from established developers, founders, researchers and analysts raise it. A large audience drawn mostly from outside the community does not.

That’s why the measure is harder to inflate than a follower count. Buying followers adds accounts to the total. It doesn’t add recognition from the accounts the graph already treats as central, because those accounts have to choose to follow.

How is a Smart Follower count different from a follower count?

A follower count weights every follow the same. A Smart Follower count counts only follows from accounts the graph identifies as central to a community. Two accounts with the same audience can sit in very different positions.

Take Mistral AI and Replit. Replit has slightly more X followers: 240K against Mistral AI’s 225.5K. Mistral AI has more than twice as many AI Smart Followers: 3,307 against 1,532.

The same pattern shows up in crypto. Optimism and Scroll, two Ethereum Layer 2 networks that help scale Ethereum, have X audiences that differ by about 0.15%: 721.2K followers for Optimism and 720.1K for Scroll. Optimism has 3,567 crypto Smart Followers and Scroll 2,006, a gap of 78%.

Neither comparison says which account is better. Each shows how an audience connects to the accounts the community already recognises, which adds context that a follower count can’t.

How do Smart Follower segments work?

Kaito maps six communities separately: crypto, AI, equity, trader, macro and general. An account has a Smart Follower count in each, and a count only means something within its own segment.

Two accounts can be close in one segment and far apart in the rest. swyx, an AI engineer and podcaster, and Ethan Mollick, a Wharton professor who writes about AI, have similar AI Smart Follower counts: 4,039 and 4,601. Outside AI they diverge. Mollick has about 3.4 times swyx’s general Smart Followers (2,900 against 864) and about 8 times his macro count (385 against 49).

Crypto shows the same thing. Tarun Chitra, founder of Gauntlet, and the markets account zerohedge have similar crypto Smart Follower counts: 4,521 and 3,673. In equity and macro, zerohedge has about 20 times Tarun’s count (2,508 against 126 in equity, 1,592 against 82 in macro).

Tarun Chitra and zerohedge are close in crypto Smart Followers (4,521 vs 3,673), but zerohedge reaches about 20 times further into equity and macro. Smart Followers 22 October 2026, Kaito data

The segments also run on different scales, because each community is a different size. Among the large market accounts checked for this article, the highest equity count was about 2,600, while leading AI accounts in the same check passed 7,000. Compare accounts within one segment, and check their rank in that segment where it’s shown.

How many Smart Followers is good?

It depends on the segment. The ranges below are editorial guidance for reading crypto counts, not an official Kaito tier system:

Crypto Smart FollowersHow to read it
5,000+Elite: among the most recognised accounts in crypto
1,000–5,000Strong: established voices, fund managers, prominent builders
300–1,000Solid: respected community members and mid-tier analysts
50–300Emerging: known within a niche
Under 50Low profile: new, anonymous, or outside the crypto community

Use these ranges for crypto only. Applied to the equity or macro segment, they would label most of the leading accounts there “low profile”.

What does a Smart Follower count tell you, and what doesn’t it?

A Smart Follower count tells you how an account’s audience connects to the community you care about. It doesn’t tell you whether the account is right.

It does show:

  • whether recognised accounts in a field follow the account
  • how that recognition is spread across communities
  • how it has changed over time

It doesn’t show:

  • Accuracy. Influential accounts can be wrong, and accounts are sometimes followed in disagreement.
  • Expertise. Network recognition is evidence of standing. Skill has to be judged from the work itself.
  • Authenticity. A high count doesn’t verify identity. Credibility scoring and fake-account detection do different jobs.
  • Why someone followed. People follow to learn, to monitor competitors, or to argue. The graph records that they followed, not why.

How do you use Smart Followers in research?

Use Smart Follower history to identify periods of growth, inspect the accounts that followed during those periods, and compare them with relevant peers. Then review the underlying posts to understand what may have attracted attention.

1. Find the growth periods

Open an account’s Smart Follower history and look for steep sections. Check whether a sudden climb coincides with a launch, a widely shared post, a fundraise or a public discussion.

TypeSafe AI, an AI lab, released its Jev model on 15 September 2026. Its AI Smart Follower count was 15 that day. It reached 180 the next day, 450 the day after (a single-day gain of 270), and 953 within a week. By 26 October it stood at 1,059, higher than its crypto count of 727.

papertrade, an exchange on HyperEVM offering synthetic perpetuals, shows the pattern in crypto. It opened trading at 14:00 UTC on 10 October 2026. Its crypto Smart Follower count rose from 829 on 3 October to 1,301 on 19 October, an increase of 57%. The steepest day came the day after launch: 159 new Smart Followers on 11 October, against 78 on launch day and 44 the day before.

papertrade’s crypto Smart Followers rose 57% from 829 to 1,301 between 3 and 19 October 2026, with the largest single-day gain, 159, on 11 October, the day after its trading launch, Kaito data

2. Check who followed during the spike

Sort the list by date and read the accounts that arrived during the climb. Check their bios and their own Smart Follower counts.

papertrade’s 11 October list contains 163 accounts, four more than the net gain of 159 in the daily count. Among them:

  • a former Ethereum core developer, now running a payments company (3,294 Smart Followers)
  • the founder of a prop-trading firm since acquired by Kraken (3,140)
  • the head of data at Dragonfly (1,987)
  • an investment partner at Equilibrium (1,726)
  • a protocol founder (1,112)
  • an investor at Coinbase Ventures (884)

Two of the six shown here have more than 3,000 crypto Smart Followers. Builders, fund investors and traders all arrived on the same day. A launch draws critics and sceptics as well as supporters, and a follow is consistent with any of them.

3. Check relevance

Ask whether the new followers belong to the community you care about. Fifty Smart Followers from AI infrastructure means something different for a crypto project than fifty from DeFi.

4. Compare against peers

Put the account next to two or three peers over the same window and in the same segment. This helps you assess whether the growth is specific to the account or part of a broader trend.

5. Read the posts

Go back to what the account posted during the growth period. The arrivals tell you who noticed. The posts tell you what they may have noticed. Together they give you a hypothesis to test.

What is Smart Following?

Smart Following runs in the opposite direction. Smart Followers are the central accounts that follow someone; Smart Following is the accounts that central accounts have started following within a set window. For one account, that window is its latest 100 follows. Across the whole market, it’s a chosen period from the last 24 hours to the last 30 days.

That makes it useful for discovery. When recognised accounts start following a smaller account, it can give you a new project or person to investigate.

How do you use Smart Followers for creator selection on Kaito Studio?

Choose campaign partners by who is in their audience as well as how big it is. Kaito Studio matches vetted creators with brand campaigns across crypto, finance and AI. Before you shortlist a creator, check their Smart Follower count, density and growth in the segment your campaign targets.

AI creators

Three AI creators with audiences between about 400K and 600K show why the biggest account isn’t automatically the best fit:

Creators A and B have similar audiences, but B has about 2.8 times as many AI Smart Followers and roughly three times the density. Creator C has the smallest audience and the fastest growth. If you want the deepest reach into the AI community, shortlist B. If you want an account gaining standing, look at C.

Crypto creators

Three perpetual-DEX trading creators show the same split. Creator D (~304K followers) has the most crypto Smart Followers (3,786) and grew 6.8% over 90 days. Creator E (~110K) has about twice D’s density: 26.2 crypto Smart Followers per 1,000 followers against 12.4. Creator F (~52K) has 774 crypto Smart Followers, a density of 14.8, and grew 1.8%.

Equity and markets accounts

Walter Bloomberg (@DeItaone) has about 1.9M X followers, roughly a third of unusual_whales’ 5.4M. Yet Walter Bloomberg has 20% more equity Smart Followers (2,597 against 2,167), a density of about 1.4 per 1,000 followers against 0.4.

Before choosing any creator, compare fees, audience relevance and actual post engagement too. Follower counts alone don’t establish who will see a campaign or which creator offers better value.

Do Smart Followers still matter after Kaito Yaps ended?

Yes. Yaps was Kaito’s post-to-earn program. Yaps were awarded for crypto-relevant, original posts, weighted by reputation, and Smart Followers were part of that reputation weighting (Kaito Yap FAQs).

Kaito retired Yaps on 15 January 2026 after X revoked access to the rewards API, and creator participation now runs through Kaito Studio. Smart Followers didn’t go away with it. They remain in Kaito Pro, Kaito Pulse and Kaito MCP, and the measure works the same way it did under Yaps.

Where can you check Smart Followers?

  • Kaito Pulse shows Smart Follower counts directly on X profiles, with a breakdown by segment (AI, crypto and equity trading).
  • Kaito Pro shows an account’s Smart Follower history, the list of Smart Followers ordered by date, and Smart Following.
  • Kaito MCP lets an AI assistant query the same data in plain language.

To use Kaito MCP (Model Context Protocol), connect it to a compatible AI assistant, specify an account, segment and date range, then ask follow-up questions in the same conversation.

For example:

“Using Kaito, return @papertrade_xyz’s crypto Smart Followers for each day from 3 to 19 October 2026, find the day with the largest increase, then list the five accounts with the highest crypto Smart Follower counts among its new followers that day. Include their bios and the retrieval date. Distinguish the change in the daily count from the number of accounts in the arrivals list, and flag missing data.”

Frequently asked questions

What are Smart Followers on Kaito?

Smart Followers are X accounts that Kaito identifies as central to a community (crypto, AI, equity, trader, macro or general) because other central accounts in that community follow them at an unusually high rate. An account’s Smart Follower count is how many of those accounts follow it. Unlike a follower count, it can’t be raised just by buying followers.

Are Kaito Smart Followers the same as “smart followers” on other platforms?

No. Other tools use the term for their own vetted lists. Kaito’s Smart Followers come from inter-following ratios within Kaito’s social graphs on X, measured separately for each segment.

Can you buy Smart Followers?

Not directly. Bought followers raise a total follower count, but Smart Followers count only follows from accounts the graph already recognises as central to a community, and those accounts have to choose to follow. Coordination among real, recognised accounts is the harder case, so read a sudden rise alongside who arrived and when.

What is the difference between Smart Followers and Smart Following?

Smart Followers are the central accounts that follow a given account. Smart Following is the reverse: the accounts that central accounts have started following within a set window, such as an account’s latest 100 follows or a market-wide period of up to 30 days. Smart Followers describe an account’s standing; Smart Following is a discovery signal.

Do Smart Followers cover stocks and AI, or only crypto?

Smart Followers cover stocks and AI as well as crypto. Kaito maps crypto, AI, equity, trader, macro and general communities separately, so an equity analyst’s Smart Follower count reflects recognition among equity-focused accounts. Each segment has its own scale, so counts compare only within a segment.

Did Smart Followers affect Yaps?

Yes. Smart Followers were part of the reputation weighting behind Yaps, Kaito’s post-to-earn program, which Kaito retired on 15 January 2026. Smart Followers are still available in Kaito Pro, Kaito Pulse and Kaito MCP.

Is a Smart Follower count the same as mindshare?

No. A Smart Follower count describes an account’s connections to central accounts in a community. Mindshare measures a subject’s share of attention within a comparison group over a period. One is about relationships, the other about attention. See our guide to what mindshare is.

Does a high Smart Follower count mean an account is accurate?

No. A Smart Follower count shows recognition within a network. Accounts can be followed in disagreement or for monitoring as well as agreement, so judge accuracy separately, from the account’s posts and track record.

Methodology. Smart Follower counts come from Kaito’s social graphs on X, retrieved through Kaito Pro and Kaito MCP. Crypto and equity examples (Optimism and Scroll, Tarun Chitra and zerohedge, papertrade, the crypto creators, Walter Bloomberg and unusual_whales) use counts from 22 October 2026. AI examples (Mistral AI and Replit, swyx and Ethan Mollick, TypeSafe AI, the AI creators) use counts from 26 October 2026. X follower counts were read from public X profiles the following day. 90-day changes compare against 24 July 2026 (crypto) and 28 July 2026 (AI). Kaito records Smart Follower counts daily, with history back to 1 January 2024. Creators in the selection section are anonymised.
